Hugs in Kiryat Arba

(If you are a returning visitor to this page, you can skip the following introduction and click on the links following it to get the latest updates.)

Kiryat Arba was founded in 1972 on the northeastern outskirts of the ancient Biblical city of Hebron in southern Judea. Hebron is the burial place of the Jewish patriarchs as well the first capital city of King David. The name, Kiryat Arba, means “the Town of the Four (Giants). In the Bible, this area of Hebron/Kiryat Arba is referred to as Kirjath-arba.

The town is a self-sufficient community, with pre-nursery through post-secondary educational facilities, medical facilities, shopping center, a bank and a post office. It also has a mayor. According to 2005 census stats, the population at that time was approximately 6,500 with an additional 2,700 Israelis living in smaller surrounding communities.

Because of it’s long and on-going struggle with terrorist attacks, we were very happy to be able to encourage the community with a bounce castle donation. They were equally happy to receive it. On December 21, 2005, they came to pick me up in a bullet-proof community vehicle and once there I received a warm welcome from the Mayor of Kiryat Arba, Zvi Katzover, and the Community Center Director, Yigal Kutai. While the castle was being set up, I was able to show them photos and to explain in detail what we do…and WHY we do it. The castle fit right in with the rest of the play area and the kids had a thoroughly exhausting good time! You can read the letter that the Mayor wrote to us expressing their thanks by clicking on the link to your right “What Israelis Say about Hugs”. Then visit the Photo Gallery to see more photos.
