Kiryat Arba was founded in 1972 on the northeastern outskirts of the ancient
Biblical city of Hebron in southern Judea. Hebron is the burial place of the
Jewish patriarchs as well the first capital city of King David. The name,
Kiryat Arba, means “the Town of the Four (Giants). In the Bible, this area
of Hebron/Kiryat Arba is referred to as Kirjath-arba.
The town is a self-sufficient community, with pre-nursery through post-secondary educational facilities, medical facilities, shopping center, a bank and a post office. It also has a mayor. According to 2005 census stats, the population at that time was approximately 6,500 with an additional 2,700 Israelis living in smaller surrounding communities.
